Embassy of the People's Republic of China in South Sudan

February 20, 2020

The Chinese embassy in South Sudan has noted that H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, and the Government of South Sudan recently made an important decision on the critical issue of the number of states, thus creating conducive conditions for breaking the deadlock in the peace talks. This is a courageous move that demonstrates the will and determination of President Kiir and the South Sudanese Government in continuously advancing the peace process in South Sudan.

We also noted that President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar have agreed today (February 20) to form the revitalized transitional government of national unity(R-TGoNU) as scheduled on February 22. The Chinese side commends and welcomes these encouraging developments, especially the crucial consensus reached between President Kiir and Dr. Machar.

We trust that the relevant parties of South Sudan will be able to resolve the remaining issues in the spirit of mutual trust and understanding, and start a new chapter in the history of South Sudan.

China has been playing a constructive role in South Sudan's peace process and providing necessary support in various forms for the implementation the revitalized peace agreement. The in kind support from China, which consists of 1,500 tons of rice, 2,500 tents, 50,000 blankets and 1,440 cartons of medicine, has been delivered to the cantonment sites and training centres.

China will continue to work with IGAD, the African Union and the international community to firmly support the government and people of South Sudan in their efforts to achieve peace, development and prosperity of the country.
